Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
